The Science

Nutrition is key for peak athletic performance. In addition to putting the right nutrients in the body, timing is everything. Having the right amount of electrolytes and amino acids can be the difference between feeling great or feeling wiped out after the training session is over. During training sessions or high energy activity, the demand for key nutrients such as glutamine rises markedly.

Intense, long duration exercise has been shown to deplete glutamine levels by as much as 34-50% and has also shown to increase the rate of infection and illness (particularly infections of the upper respiratory tract). The reason for this, is that various cells of the immune system such as lymphocytes and macrophages depend on glutamine as a primary fuel source, and when a temporary suppression of the immune system occurs, as does with exercise, these immune system cells may call on muscle tissue to supply their glutamine.

Supplementing with L-Glutamine can not only help prevent immune suppression post- workout, but it can also support muscle anabolism, increase plasma growth hormone, enhance glycogen stores, and hydrate muscle cells. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are also supportive for muscle recovery and may reduce overall recovery time due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Magnesium and Potassium are also important post-workout nutrients. High body temperature, sweating and dehydration are some of the reasons for low levels of potassium and magnesium in the body, which very often leads to muscle cramps.
